Fenway Park is the home of the Boston Red Sox Major League Baseball
team. The ballpark was completed in 1912, and was reconstructed in
1934. Beloved by countless animated Boston sports fans.
The Red Sox got their name from the 1870's Boston Red Stockings, which eventually became the Boston Braves and
now the Atlanta Braves in the National League. The Red Sox have won World Series Championships in 1903, 1912, 1915,
1916, 1918, 2004, 2007 and have made many appearances in post-season play.
The "Green Monster" is the 37 foot high wall in left field. The
scoreboard in it is still hand-operated by hanging number signs during each
game. "Pesky's Pole" is the right field foul line pole, which
counts as a home run if struck. Johnny Pesky batted over .300 career,
but hit few home runs. One of those home runs hit the pole and was an important
game-winner; the nickname of the pole was solidified in the1980s.
Boston's Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941, the last Major League Player to bat
over 400 [Boston's Wade Boggs hit over 400 spread over 2 seasons in the
1980's.] The "Curse of the Babe" is a local term associated with not
winning a World Series from 1918 to 2004 (86 years). Babe Ruth was
traded to the Yankees in 1919 after the 1918 season.
During the regular season, Fenway Park tours are available seven days a week. The tours start at the souvenir shop across the street from the park on Yawkey Way. For the sports lover, Fenway Park is a must-see attraction when visiting the
city.
