Boston Convention Center
The Boston Convention & Exhibition Center is a world-class exhibition facility located in Boston’s Seaport District. The building contains 516,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, easily divided into 10 different configurations. The largest trade shows can be accommodated at this modern commodious facility. The convention center is conveniently positioned directly across the harbor from Logan Airport, with airport transit time being only a few minutes via the Ted William Tunnel.
Some of the facility’s amenities include: 300,000+ square feet of registration and function space; 160,000 square feet of flexible meeting space; a 40,020 square foot column-free Grand Ballroom; wi-fi enabled internet access and cell phone coverage throughout the building; access to any part of the building in no more than eight minutes; a food court with seating capacity for 700; two private ring roads; and 62-covered loading bays and five elephant dock doors with exhibition floor access.
The $700 million Boston Convention & Exhibition Center was completed in 2004. The original Seaport District was home to the New England wool industry until the 1950s. In the 1970s, this area of South Boston was comprised mainly of railroad and scrap yards. During the 1980s, artists began occupying a lot of the empty warehouse space, marking the start of redevelopment of the area. Construction of the convention center was delayed for many years, and it was even proposed that a new stadium be built here to replace Fenway Park, and then the New England Patriots considered the site also. The final result thankfully was a modern convention center that is large enough to meet today’s global business needs.
Completion of the new convention center spawned development of the entire Seaport District. Three new high-rise hotels were built near the facility. The MBTA has completed its new Silver Line, with a subway station nearby, which connects the district directly into the rapid transit system. The success of the new convention center has also spawned increased tourism for the entire city, with original concerns about reduced bookings at the state’s Hynes Convention Center on Boylston Street being proved unfounded.
The Boston Convention Center is located near the Boston World Trade Center, Institute for Contemporary Art, Fan Pier, Children’s Museum (location of free summer concerts), and site of the Boston Tea Party. The Financial District is located about one-half mile west. Also nearby is the Boston Harborwalk, which connects the Seaport District with Rowe’s and Long Wharves. New England Aquarium and historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace are close to Long Wharf.
