Hynes Convention Center
The Hynes Convention Center is conveniently located at Boylston and Gloucester Streets in Boston's historic Back Bay District. The building adjoins the Prudential Center complex, and allows quick access to the Prudential Center Mall and Copley Place. The building was completely renovated in 1986, which significantly expanded meeting spaces and service capabilities for guests.
Some of the facility’s amenities include: 193,000 square feet of exhibit space allowing up to four concurrent events, 71,000 square feet of flexible meeting space which includes 38 permanent rooms, 24,500 square foot grand ballroom, 60,000 square feet of registration and function space, fiber-optic backbone links and T3 service, and a cafeteria and coffee house in a central lobby that can accommodate 400 to 500 people.
The John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center was constructed in 1965, and was originally known as the War Memorial Auditorium. The building was part of a city plan known as The New Boston, which led to demolition of blighted areas of downtown Boston. The goal of the project was to modernize the city, increase business opportunities, and attract shoppers back into the downtown from the suburbs. The Prudential Center complex was part of the plan, and the Prudential Tower was the tallest building in the city for 10 years. New Boston was promulgated by Mayor John B. Hynes, and the convention center was renamed in his honor. New Boston demolished a lot of the city’s older architecture, but overall greatly modernized the city and attracted many new businesses including financial services and insurance companies.
There are many attractions near the Hynes Convention Center, including the Prudential Center, Prudential Skywalk, and Copley Place. The Newbury Street shopping are is just one block north up Gloucester Street. Fenway Park and the iconic Citgo Sign are nearby to the west in Kenmore Square. To the east are Copley Square, the Public Garden, Cheers Boston, and downtown Boston.
Of special note, the Hynes Convention Center hosts many exhibits and performances during the annual First Night celebration on New Year’s Eve.
